3-2-2-2-1 Formation
A variation. The 3-2-2-2-1 gives even more depth than the
3-2-2-3. With this formation, only one the team's fastest Forward
pushes up all the time for breakaways. This formation gives up width
in the attack to gain more depth.
2 keys to making it work. (1) When under attack, one or two of
the forwards stay out to the halfway line (or even further if the
other team's Fullbacks are deep) shifting with the ball. This forces
the opponent's FB to stay back, keeping them closer to their
defensive goal). (2) Fullbacks or Midfielders quickly kick the ball
deep to the opponent's half of the field. The forwards can then win
the ball and fast break.

Strategy
Fastbreak Overview. Fast break when the
opposing fullbacks push up field with their team on the attack...
Sub primarily for the midfielders, then the forwards. Goals on fast
break counterattacks when the opposition's Fullbacks push up on the
attacked.
Attacking Plan
Attacking Overview. "Clears" the ball away from "Defending
Third"... An attacking plan based on a 3-2-2-3 formation... Forwards
are positioned to win the ball, then launch a quick attack... A
quick counterattacking style of moving the ball to the "Middle
Third" and "Attacking Third", at which point you can play an
"indirect"... A man marking defense (instead it uses a zone defense)
and a "sweeper" style of defense that "pushes up" (instead it
"defends deep" with a "Flat Back" 3)...
Defensive Plan
Defensive Overview. Excellent recreational teams are built
around a team with two good defensive midfielders and a good center
forward. The most skilled, best conditioned players in the 3-2-2-3
must be the defensive midfielders. Use on long field, not many subs,
usually the fullbacks lack speed and stamina.
