The Instep Reception
Overview. Used when not pressured by the opponent.
Getting Ready. Shoulders - square to the ball...
Receiving Instep - 12 to 18 inches off the ground...
Receiving Foot - extended and parallel to the ground...
Balance Leg - flexed... Arms - out from the body for
balance... Head - upright and motionless... Eyes -
focused on the ball.
Performing the Skill. Receiving Instep - catches the ball
as if catching a baseball with a glove, then drops the ball in a
position where the player controls the ball.. Receiving Foot
- move to the ground as the instep "catches" the ball... Body
- protects the ball from the opponent.
Follow-through. Receiving Foot - moves the ball into an
open space... Head - up... Eyes- watching the field.
Please show me an
Effective Passing Drill that develops a player's ability to
receive and kick a ball very quickly.

Instep Pass
Overview. For passing 25 yards or more.
Getting Ready. Approach to the Ball - slight angle
from behind the ball... Balance Foot (non-kicking foot) -
along side the ball and pointing at the target... Balance Leg
Knee - slightly flexed... Shoulder/Hips - square to the
target... Kicking Leg - swings back... Kicking Foot -
fully extended in a fixed position... Kicking Leg Knee - over
the ball... Arms - out from the body for balance... Head
- upright and motionless... Eyes - focused on the ball.
Performing this Skill. Weight - shifts forward...
Kicking Leg - powerfully snaps forward... Kicking Foot -
the large flat surface of the instep makes contact with the center
of the ball...
Follow-through. Weight - center over the ball of the
balance foot... Momentum - shifts forward through the ball...
Kicking Leg - comes up to chest level.
