Two Factors to Shooting Well
A player needs two elements to shoot well (1) proper alignment - all body parts line up with the basket and (2) judgment - how hard, how far and when to make the shoot.
A Playing Tip: The most consistent shooters use a compact movement, they use the same muscles and a limited amount of muscles each time they make a shot.

Proper Shot Alignment.
Front Foot
- lines up with the target. The right foot for right handed shooters and the left foot for left handed shooters... Back Foot - The back foot toe lines up with the front foot heel. The back foot is about shoulder width apart from the shooting foot. The back foot is used primarily for balance during the shoot... Knees - the closer to the basket the more the knees are used for jumping. At the end of the shoot, the knees are flexed enough to slip a dime under the player's heels... Shooting Side Elbow - lined up with the shooting toe. The older the player, the higher the elbow during the shoot. For older players, the elbow will be even with the eyes... Wrist - pushes the ball up and through, the desired path brings the ball comes straight down toward the basket... Hands/Fingers - the index finger and the middle finger make up a "shooting fork." The middle finger is spread away from the index finger until the skin becomes tight. All the fingers are spread with the outside quarter of the thumb touching the ball. The opposite hand is used strictly for balance.
